Zachary and His Doljanchi

Zachary turned 1 at the end of February. In Korea that is a big deal since there was a long period of time when the majority of children didn't live to see their first birthday. They call it DOLJANCHI - the first birthday, not the period of time where the kids didn't live. We keep birthdays pretty simple in our house but decided to honor one doujinChi tradition which is shown later in the post. First some pictures for grandparents and far-away family and a little bit about Zachary.

He started walking or at least taking a few steps at the end of January/beginning of February. But he still prefers to crawl. He sometimes does a little funny crawl where he slides one leg under him and pushes himself with his other leg. I think we caught it in one of the following videos.

Zachary is a mama's boy but he still loves his daddy. He actually prefers to be held by men than women right now much to the joy of a few brethren at Church and to the dismay of their wives. As Fred and I are both occupied during the 2nd and 3rd hours, the men of the Church have been very kind to watch Zachary for us and he loves them.

Fred has been working nights and long hours at that so the kids make the most of their time with him while he is home, including post-bath snuggles.

Zachary is a very smiley kid. He loves to laugh and he thinks he and his sisters are pretty funny.

Zachary causes more mischief than my other two. As Fred previously posted he loves trash cans, bathrooms, and dirt piles. He also loves boy toys which exist in small amounts at my house. My friend let him play with nunchucks at her house and he was so happy I couldn't get him to hold still for a clear picture.

Zachary is also known as a biter in our house. He especially loves toes and poor Hazel has nearly lost a few to him. She likes to kneel on the bench at the table leaving her toes exposed behind her while she eats and Zachary has frequently found occasion to give her a fright in the middle of her meals. He also likes to cruise along the edge of the couch and disrupt our reading time by latching his teeth to legs, toes, and knees all the while grinning like crazy as though we were enjoying the whole affair.

As part of the doujinchi, an array of objects is placed on a table and the birthday child is encouraged to choose one of them. It is supposed to be fortune-telling of sorts. Each object signifies something. A book is intelligence, rice means they'll never be hungry, money for great wealth, string/yarn is a long life, etc. We set up our own little display of objects and let Zachary predict his future. I love the following sequence of pictures, but we also have a video at the end too if you prefer.

And his second choice.

We love this kid to pieces. Happy Birthday, bud.

Happy Birthday, Zachary! I know it was last month but I wasn't there to tell him. He is adorable, a complete package of fun! His smiles light up his face with a mischievous look. I love this post to learn more about him. Sounds like Hazel needs to learn to wear shoes so she can keep her toes. His antics make me laugh. It will be interesting to see how musical he is in the future. Maybe he will be a future Mack Wilberg! That would be awesome! He is awesome already!😊

That was such a great treat to watch him choose his items. I think you can fairly say he will be related to Larry and Eric Petrie! How I love hearing those two men sing together! The last time was in Las Vegas when Fred graduated from Residency. And Fred has no little talent in music as well! Once Frederick said to me, "Mom, why do I hear original music in my mind? It's music I have never heard before!" I replied that I believed that Music and Science reside in the same part of the brain, and it takes real intelligence to hear and create music! Smart wonderful parents that are giving this boy a life worth celebrating! We love you, Zachary!!
