Gravensteen Castle 2

On our way in, we noticed a group staring up at the outside of the building from within the castle walls. They were taking pictures. I learned from a passer-by that there was a man who had suffered a heart attack (they think) while climbing the narrow ways but the same narrow stairs made moving him to the ambulance difficult. They were lowering him out a window. I guess that could have been cool to see but I decided to give him some privacy.

Here is a quick video of the entrance:

Climbing the narrow stairs.

Entrance Hall

Banquet Hall with pieces of armor and other things on display.

Can you imagine wearing this?  It would be so heavy!

The same goes for this. Not sure I could swing something this heavy with any degree of precision.

Up to the roof.

Great views. Cold wind.

Yeah,  I would think twice (or 50 times) before trying to storm this castle.

Or making anyone mad. The history of this place was one of war and torture. They had rooms dedicated to torture and in very unique ways I might say. One was a square room where chains were attached to the corners at neck height and to a collar worn by the afflicted individual. The collar was lined with spikes so that they had to stand and any shifting of weight in a direction or side to side would result in punctures from the spikes. The sign said most prisoners who underwent this treatment never lasted more than  3-4 hours :(

It made me wonder what those people could have achieved if the ingenuity was focused on buildings and improving life rather than finding ways to hurt and destroy. I guess that is why they call it the Dark Ages. Mom: Hooded fireplace, and Romanesque columns with a groin-vault ceiling. Great aligned stone on the walls - almost like bricks in courses or rows. And beautiful stone tile floor.
