Hiking Angel Rock

I wanted to get out and see a little of where we live before the weather changed so we went for a hike one weekend. It took 1 hour to get to the trailhead and Zachary caused some problems for us while driving which required us to pull over and deal with explosive behavior... it was rough. After about 40 minutes he calmed down enough to allow us to drive forward 10 minutes to get to the trailhead.

Camille is not exactly one for exerting herself much so she hitched a ride as soon as she could.

The trail started nice and easy through the woods.

This time we had bear spray so everyone felt a little more secure.

Random close up of some plants

This boardwalk was the start of the uphill and reminded me of one of the hikes Jari and I took while in Ireland that had long trails made of planks like this one.

The hill was about 900-1000 feet of elevation gain so we had to stop occasionally to take in the view.

Some great views.

The climb was rough and surprisingly Zachary did well while the oldest struggled with the climb and wanted to turn back.

But we made it to the top even if we had to carry the kids a little of the way.

Some views from the top and the hike down:

The trail was a bit steep on the way down and I had Camille on my shoulders. It ended up being a bit of a workout.

We all took turns nearly falling. Jari did a great job keeping Zachary on his feet and moving.

Camille ran out of steam

Here was the fun find at the end of the trail: a freshly cut tree by a beaver with the shavings around the stump and easily visible tooth grooves in the wood.

I caught a glimpse of the beaver as it swam on the far side of the small pond and tried to point it out but I think that only Jari was able to see it before it swam underneath some trees that had fallen and disappeared.

And Zachary's favorite part

A knot on a tree that looked like a buttocks.
